OUR STORY
How We Got here! As founder and owner of EVOLV Career Services, Paula Kerr uses her background and experiences in human resources to help individuals succeed in their careers.
Paula holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications/Public Relations from Iona College. She brings many years of varied business experiences to her work, including human resources administration, communication, learning content development and, of course, writing individuals’ resumes and preparing them to “ace the interview”. With a strong belief that everyone deserves a fair chance, Paula also uses her mentoring skills to help people achieve their fullest potential — a special skill for which she is recognized by individuals who often ask for career advice.
A Little Nugget of Knowledge Has Come a Long Way. The minimal resume writing knowledge Paula received while in high school was valuable but did not serve her well when searching for jobs. So on one occasion when she found herself sitting from across a recruiter’s desk, that recruiter not only took a deep interest in Paula as an individual; she also invested her time to critique Paula’s resume and provided feedback as to how she could reconstruct it for a more effective job search experience. The recruiter emphasized, “You want to write your resume using a pyramid format, stating each of your duties from the most important to the least important.” This was a great eye-opener for Paula and she took that valuable nugget of advice and went to work immediately, revamping the entire resume, incorporating the “Pyramid” format. And what a difference that simple restructuring made! Since that period of her career, she has coached numerous people to follow the pyramid format on their resumes.
Opportunity, Always Knocking! Later in her career, Paula decided to start a family. However, when she finally became pregnant with her daughter, due to numerous complications in the process she was ordered to bed rest. Paula was then faced with the dilemma of putting her career on hold while trying to get through her pregnancy. She knew this decision could “sideline” her career, but she was up for the challenge; except, she didn’t have a plan, so she devised one…”What if I could start a resume writing service?”
Charged with the idea, and while raising her children (as a stay-home mom) Paula began writing resumes for individuals, including college graduates entering the workforce. This led to coaching individuals on how to interview as well as “sell their skills”. Now years later, Paula is [still] coaching others on writing their resume in ways that a hiring manager can see, first hand, what skills the candidate is bringing to their organization.
